Service Description

Step Back in Time & Explore the Power of Water Nestled within Mission Trails Regional Park, Old Mission Dam is a historic landmark that tells the story of water’s impact on both human civilization and the natural world. Originally constructed in the early 1800s by Spanish missionaries, this dam was the first major water storage system in California, designed to supply water to Mission San Diego. Today, it stands as a reminder of the ingenuity of early water management while offering a unique outdoor classroom for exploring the science of rain, water flow, and erosion. What We’ll Learn: 💧 The Water Cycle in Action – We’ll observe how rainwater collects, moves through landscapes, and affects the environment. 🌊 The Science of Erosion – Witness how flowing water shapes the land over time, carving riverbeds, smoothing rocks, and shifting soil. 🛠️ How Humans Control Water – Learn about the role of dams in flood control, water storage, and protecting communities. 🌎 The Dam’s Impact on Wildlife – Discover how the San Diego River ecosystem supports local plant and animal life, from towering sycamores to aquatic species thriving in the reservoir. 🚶 Hands-On Learning Activities: Erosion in Motion: See erosion up close as we compare different parts of the trail and observe real-time soil displacement. Dam Builders Challenge: Work together to design and test mini dams using natural materials, just as the missionaries did centuries ago. Eco Scavenger Hunt: Identify signs of wildlife and water movement along the riverbanks. By the end of our hike, students will have a deeper understanding of water’s essential role in shaping our landscapes, how early settlers used water management, and the importance of conservation today. Join us for a hands-on adventure that connects science, history, and nature, making Old Mission Dam a living classroom!
